The 230SL to the 280SL went into production in 1963. The sleek, angular look was in stark contrast to the curved, organic lines of its predecessor, the 190SL. The nickname Pagoda (or Pagode) comes from the roofline of the hardtop, lower in the middle and higher at the edges. The Pagoda was sold in large numbers, more than 48,000, making it one of Mercedes Benz's most successful and sort after models.
These cars are a big step forward over the 190SL, they are very reliable with great performance to match. The Pagodas have a more powerful, 6 cylinder engine, more luxury and performance than the 190SL models, due to their mechanical fuel injection system. Although originally they were supplied with 2 disc brakes and 2 drum brakes, starting with the 250SL forward, they came with disc brakes all around. Later models were available with modern features such as; Power steering, 4 speed automatic gearbox, power assisted brakes, air conditioning, and AM/FM radios
This car we have for sale is a matching numbers 280L Pagoda. It is completely original and only ever had 3 previous owners. It has a service history, owners manuals, books Kardex and tools. The mileage is a genuine 66,000 km.
The car is accident and rust free and is in the original paint colour. The seats and all coverings in the car are original, however it has had a new set of carpets imported from Germany. The interior is in excellent original condition. All the chrome is in excellent condition and wood work is perfect too. The car comes with a set of mag rims aswell.
The car looks fantastic, is die straight, and drives exceptionally well. There are very few completely original Right Hand Drive 280SL's left in SA and even fewer with all its books and history. This is one of the last truly special Merc's in SA
