The Fiat 850 (Tipo 100G) is a small rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive car manufactured and marketed by Italian car manufacturer Fiat from 1964 to 1973. Its technical design was an evolution of the successful Fiat 600. The internal name for the Fiat 600 development project was "Project 100" and consequently, the internal Fiat codename for the 850 project was 100G (G was a follow on of model designations for the 600 which ran from A to F).
The engine of the 850 was based on that of the Fiat 600, but had its capacity increased to 843 cc. The 850 came in two versions: "normale" (standard) with 34 hp (25 kW) and engine code 100G.000 and "super" with 37 hp (28 kW) and engine code 100G.002. The maximum speed was approximately 125 km/h (78 mph). While it was not a large step forward in technical development, it possessed a certain charm with its large rolling eyes and its short tail, in which the engine sat
After the hard years of war and the subsequent period of reconstruction in Europe, people longed for larger cars again from the mid-1960s. Fiat complied with this request, but didn’t develop a completely new vehicle. They instead took the well-known and popular 600 as the basis. In order to get more space in the interior, the wheelbase was lengthened by just 27 millimeters, but the cockpit was moved further forward and could actually offer comfortable seats to four people. In addition, the overhangs grew at the front and rear, while the tank was moved behind the front axle, thereby increasing the trunk space. A small storage space behind the back seats could also be set up. Behind it sat the four-cylinder engine, enlarged to 843 cc, which in the two-door sedan produced 34 hp or 37 hp (in the Super with super petrol in the tank). The Special version with 47 hp followed, the drive of which was also found in the 850 Coupé from 1965. Then there was the Spider and a Barchetta version with 49 hp.
Fiat also introduced the convertible sporty two-seater Spider at the same time as the Coupé, with the original 843 cc engine tuned to produce 49 hp (36 kW) which allowed it to reach a top speed of 145 km/h (90 mph). The body was designed and built by Bertone in its Grugliasco, Turin plant. The folding fabric roof stowed under a rear metal body panel.
The Bertone design featured smooth, simple lines and details, including recessed headlamps equipped with plexiglass covers angled to match the adjacent fenders/wings — and dihedral side panels similar to Bertone's 1963 Chevrolet Testudo.
This little car was was part of a larger collection of classic Italian cars and is in a very good but not perfect condition. It was obviously refurbished at some stage in its life and the paint is good. The contrast of the bright Red with Maroon interior gives it a very brash persona. Mechanically the little car is in a very good condition and she drives very well. If you are looking for a small, fun, unusual classic car, then look no further! A lovely car that gets appreciative looks and smiles where ever she goes :-)
